Neutral at stoplight?

Is it okay to put the car in neutral when at a stop light? Does it really make a difference gas wise?

  1. When your in neutral you are not in control of the car.


  2. Yes. All the taxi drivers do it. Doing so also lessens the burden on your brakes.

  3. Actually, it is the best thing to do when the light turns red... especially if you have a manual transmission, it eases the tension on your left foot.

    Yes, it improves fuel economy because by putting the gear in neutral, it releases the tension on the gears, less work, less consumption.

  4. You would absolutely NOT save any gas at idle, in fact, you would use more gas [although minuscule amounts].

    Try it, start your car,  then put it in gear, and read the tach, now put it in neutral or park and read it again.

    You'll see that when it's out of gear the tach increases.

  5. Its a waste of time..... All that will do is wear out the shift linkages and parts.... There is no advantage
