Nevada Commission allows promoting Alistair Overeem or Nick Diaz – UFC News
Nevada State Athletic Commission’s executive director Keith Kizer announced that the body is good with the Ultimate Fighting Championship promoting Alistair Overeem and Nick Diaz for their upcoming bouts, as long as nothing goes out of the way.
Overeem and Diaz both are facing suspension for using performance enhancing drugs prior to their fights. Overeem is due to get his license next year while Diaz still has a long way to go.
However, UFC president Dana White has clearly asserted that both fighters will go to the commission once again to get clearance.
“But he's still got to go before the commission, and it still doesn't mean the outcome could be good,” said White. “But I think that Alistair has been doing the right thing, as far as the commission is concerned, and doing all the things that he needs to
do to get back in their good graces. It's looking positive and optimistic.”
Overeem is scheduled to face Antonio Silva at UFC 156 next year on February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
It should be noted here that the commission has not allowed promoting Diaz until he gets clearance. However, according to Kizer, the commission has no issues with promoting or scheduling Diaz until the fight is not within his suspension term.
“As long as the fight was after the suspension ended, there wouldn't be a problem with that. But obviously a fighter fighting while on suspension somewhere else, I wouldn't approve the fight.”
As White has put it, it seems like the commission is quite lenient towards Overeem. The way he has carried on with his case, it seems like he will be getting the license once his suspension ends.
Overeem was suspended earlier this year when he was scheduled to fight in the USA. A random drug test was taken of him and his opponent, the former came out positive, enforcing the commission to impose a ban on him.
White, back then, was quite surprised hearing about Overeem’s ban. Back then, White iterated that Overeem’s suspension came to him as a shock.
