Me and my wife haven't surfed before, we just moved to waikiki from honolulu. (can't wait to move out of these areas and into Kailua...) What types of boards should we look into for a first board? I'm also a little creeped about sharks, should I worry around Oahu island?

  1. most boards are the same but they just have a different logo on them. just go around to the local surf shops and ask about boards. big boards are easier to learn on. take a lesson because its fun and you ride a lot of wave. don't be afraid of the sharks they don't want to get near you

  2. Get a huge, fat, big, longboard.  They are easy to keep your balance on, and can get you up on the board no prob.  Dont worry about any sharks mate, they wont snatch at you there.

    aloha

  3. Try body boarding first. Body boarding will teach you how to handle yourself in the waves and you'll learn the process of how waves break. Once you get used to it, surfing will be easier.

Kailua has beautiful beaches but none that are really great for board surfing. Kalama Beach (in Kailua - one of the spots along Kailua Bay) has a nice gentle shore break that is great for body boarding (and for the family). Waimanalo Beach Park and Bellows (both on the Windward-side) also has nice beginner waves for body boarding. If you would like to surf, start in Waikiki. Its crowded but the waves are probably one of the best waves to learn on.

  4. don't worry about the sharks and i like oneill boards but that's my oppinion you can chose whatever you like! Good Luck!

  5. I personally have been to Oahu Island, Waikiki one and a half years back. The boards that you guys will get sould be mabe 9 foot mals. Say hi to Duke for me aswell ok mate. Aloha

  6. don't worry about the sharks but you can choose any board you like.

  7. Sharks shouldn't be a big worry. My beach break was labeled as the second most shark infested place in the world last year me and my buddies havent gotten bit once. But I really sugest a longboard for your first board. Robert August(surf brand) makes great longboards same with Stewart(surf brand). You will also want three fins it gives you more control. Another plus to longboards is they make you feel safer from sharks because what shark is going to bit something that might be bigger or the same size. Sharks never bite people purposely they sometimes think its just a fish.

  8. big fat boards are the easiest to learn on and heaps of fun. try a mini mal or foamy or long board thingy, i still use them (well i try) . there really good for getting ur confidence up!!! as for sharks very unlikely .... but im no pro

    good luck =]]

  9. Don't worry about sharks man. You will be fine. You are going to want to surf all the time when you learn how to. I go any chance I get.
