  2. Neville George Clevely Heath was a handsome young man, well educated with all the social graces, debonair and charming.

He was also a psychotic sexual s****t.

He had joined the RAF in 1937 aged 20 but was thrown out after he went AWOL. He joined the South African Air Force during the war but again was court marshalled at it's close for wearing medals he hadn't earned, and he came back to England in 1946.

He lived largely without paid employment, using a variety of aliases as well as claiming military ranks to which he was not entitled. He had a powerful, perverted s*x drive and with his good looks and charm had little difficulty in finding willing partners.

In June 1946 he took a room at the Pembridge Court Hotel in Notting Hill, signing the register as "Colonel Heath". He then picked up Margery Gardener in a club and brought her back to his room. Although Margery had a liking for "rough s*x" she could not have expected the explosion of sadistic violence unleashed by Heath. He beat her so severely with a whip that vivid diamond-shaped bruises were left imprinted on her body, he almost bit off one of her nipples and he forced a poker inside her which inflicted such horriffic injuries she would have died if Heath had not suffocated her first. He then calmly washed himself and the dead Margery's face and checked out of the hotel.

When the name "Colonel" Heath appeared in the newspapers after the body was discovered, Neville Heath took himself off to Bournemouth and registered under the alias Group-Captain Rupert Brooke at the Tollard Royal Hotel. There he met 21 year old Doreen Marshall.

Five days later a large swarm of flies was seen on a patch of undergrowth near the hotel. Upon inspection the body of Doreen Marshall was discovered, naked except for a yellow shoe and the rest of her clothing nonchalantly draped over her. Like Gardener her nipples had been partially bitten off and jagged slash marks reached from her groin to her chest, a branch from a nearby tree had been used to violate her and her throat had been cut.

During the investigation, with supreme arrogance, "Group-Captain Brooke" voulenteered to help the police. They became suspicious of him and discovered his description matched that of the infamous "Colonel Heath" wanted in connection with the Gardener murder. Amongst his possessions Scotland Yard discovered items belonging to the women such as handkerchiefs, scarves, train tickets and weapons stained with the victims blood.

Although guilty of both murders Heath was only tried for that of Margery Gardener. The trial was one of the most famous in post-war Britain with Heath pleading insanity. It took the jury less than an hour to find him guilty and he was sentenced to death.

In a typically debonair gesture Heath requested that the diaries of his conquests be destroyed to save the embarrassment of those involved. His final request was for a shot of whiskey - after a pause he said "Better make it a double".

Neville Heath was hanged at Pentonville prison on 16th October 1946.

The TV series "The Charmer" starring Nigel Havers (adapted from the novels "Gorse" by Patrick Hamilton) was based on Neville Heath.

  3. Neville George Clevely Heath (6 June 1917-16 October 1946) was a sadistic psychopath, born in Essex, England, who was responsible for the murders of at least two young women. He was executed in London in 1946.He joined the Royal Air Force in 1937, but was dismissed for going absent without leave. He was caught obtaining credit by fraud, and six months later was sent to Borstal for housebreaking and forgery. On Sunday 16th June, Heath took a room at the Pembridge Court Hotel in Notting Hill Gate. He used his real name, but added the title Lieutenant-Colonel. He was with a woman, Yvonne Symonds, who he said was his wife - in fact they had only just met. Heath had promised to marry her, so she spent the night with him and returned to her home the next day.The trial of Neville Heath for the murder of Margery Gardner began on 24th September 1946. J.D. Casswell KC, who defended Heath, chose not to call him to give evidence. Casswell relied on the defence of insanity, and called Dr W.H de Bargue Hubert, an experienced criminal psychiatrist, to testify as an expert witness.
