Question:

New, sharpened ice skates?

I just bought my first pair of ice skates and they had just gotten sharpened. When I went on to the ice, I couldn't stop at all, I tried to do a snowplow stop but I just kept sliding, and when i tried to do a turn, I could barely do it. When I had the rental skates, which are probably very dull skates, i could stop and turn, now with my new, sharp skates, I can't at all!

Help! What should I do?

Is this normal?

Thank you!

  1. Sometimes newly sharpened blades can take a little adjustment period.  You're right...you were probably used to skating on rentals which had probably no edges on the blades.  The more you skate, it will get easier, the edges will wear down and the process will start all over again.  Just keep skating and you will get used to it and get comfortable wtih them.

    Good luck!

  2. Yes this is normal. You need to get use to your new skates first. When ever I get new skates I always take time to just skate and get use to them and break them in.

  3. It is common to struggle to stop when you first get your skates sharpened. Give them a few skating sessions and they should dull down so they aren't quite so hard to do things in.

  4. Its totally normal that right after getting sktes sharpened for it too be hard to stop. You're just used to really dull blades but sharp blades are soo much better. Usually after skating once or twice on newly sharpened skates you can stop on them.

    Have fun skating!

  5. it always takes getting used to every time you get them sharpened

after they lose a tiny bit of the sharpness it should be good

but try to get used to the feel of sharpened skates because its not really safe to skate on dull blades

  6. switching from rentals to your own steps is a big change, congrats! like you said those rentals are dull. they are also probably very old too. getting your own skates is hard to adjust to because you have to establish deep edges until you get used to it. also, a lot of new skaters just use their feet, upper-body and hips are crucial though. you have to lean with your skating. its totally normal to be a little clumsy with new skates, but it is so much better in the long run. skating is amazing and im so glad you decided to pick it up! happy skating!!!

  7. Maybe you are not on your edge enough or you're not applying enough pressure.
