I had a brand new one installed in my greenhouse and after an hour or two it gets hot, and emits a smell like burning wires, or burnt copper.

i looked up what i could find online and the only thing i found was about the smell of PCB's which were outlawed in all light fixtures in the `1970's and the smell of ballasts melting inside and burning off tar and other chemicals.

is there something wrong with my ballast or will it go away soon ?

the light works just fine, and it doesnt get too hot to touch, just extremely warm. aside from the smell everything is normal.

  1. I would just let it run for a couple of weeks. Make sure you still have time to return it! These things just take time to get used to the temperatures .
