New Agreement potentially disastrous for New York Mets -MLB Update
The New York Mets were on the fast track to rebuilding their franchise over the offseason but were devastated after the Major League Baseball (MLB) and MLB Players Association announced the signing of the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which
imposes a luxury tax on teams that spend beyond their need.
While the Mets were focused on improving their team with the induction of a number of players, they will now have to think twice whether how much they really can spend and how much will be needed to pay off the tax that will be implemented on them.
There can be two scenarios if a team is to spend over-slot on signing a draft pick, which could be either a tax, or a tax and a loss of draft pick or even multiple selections in the upcoming season as well.
This will not only create a hurdle in teams like the New York Mets being penalised from building up a stronger team but will also lessen the incentives given to newly inducted players into the league looking for more than they hoped for in the start.
“We traditionally haven’t gone crazy with draft picks, but we did go over this past year,” assistant GM John Ricco said of the team’s spending on the previous entry draft. “Now you have to talk about different strategies with each pick.”
Now going into the upcoming draft, Ricco will have to draft out a proper planned out strategy if he wishes to save himself and the team from any potential extra costs and problems.
“It changes your strategy going into the draft and with everything you do when you’re rebuilding your system,” Ricco added. “In the past, you had a budget and you went from there, but now you have to be concerned about every pick.”
The payroll limit for the Mets will be somewhere around $178 million, which at the moment is being termed as enough for the future spending needs of the team, but might change in time, resulting in the need for a constructive and strategic plan.
It will certainly be interesting to see how things play out for the New York Mets and GM John Ricco.
