Question:

New Apartment: Some Power Outlets Don't Work. Please Help!?

I just moved into a BRAND NEW apartment, never lived in before, in a nice area. For some reason the master bathroom outlets do not work and a couple in the master bedroom don't while a few in the bedroom do work.

I tried turning all breakers off and on = no effect. In the kitchen there are two outlets that have the red lights on them that show "test." I tried playing with those too= no effect.

Any ideas? Please help. Thanks.

  1. let management know right away.

  2. are they hooked up to light switches?  often apartments without ceiling lights have light switches that are synced with switches in the room.  takes some trial and error to figure it out.

otherwise, call the apartment manager and get them to fix it.

  3. Plug a Lamp into the non-working outlets and flip the switch, the outlets are probably set up for lights to work with the switch.

  4. They may not be connected to the system. Get an electrician to test them.

If it's a brand new apartment the builders are responsible

  5. I would start out by rechecking the outlets with the test lights on.those outlets in your kitchen that giving you trouble are the one's that you need to have replacef if  you can't get them reset. What you have is all of the outlets are hooded together and if those want reset you wont have power to the rest of the outlets.

  6. There probably is another "test" outlet somewhere.  These are GFCI outlets (ground fault circuit interrupter).  Basically they are outlets that are required around water--they are very sensitive to a lot of electrical current flowing through them and stop you from getting electrocuted if for example  you knock a hair dryer or toaster or something like that into the sink.

Generally these GFCI outlets can be tested by pushing a little button on them (generally there are two buttons on each GFCI outlet).  When you push one it turns the electricity off.  When you push  the other one (sometimes you have to hold it in for a second or two) it turns the electricity back on.

If you can't make it work call the landlord.
