I just got a new baby chick and I don't know what breed he is. He is a dark shade of yellow and black horizontal stripes down his back. I just wanna know what breed he is,we don't live on a farm, and have a decent home made for him. Food, water, and a decent shelter is that enough. It would be bad for us to fail, and it die,I'm already getting attached to it, so if your know please help.I wanna keep it alive!

  1. You'll need to keep it warm, too. But not too warm; I once had like 20 chickens die because we left them outside on an EXTREMELY hot summer day... ugh.

Get a light fitted into the shelter and observe how the chickens react; if they seem comfortable, the temperature is right, if they stay away from the lightbulb it's too hot, if they struggle to crowd around the light it's too cold.

  2. there are alot of different types of chickens that look like that when they are babies but always grow up to look different

u can tell if its a boy or girl by looking at the top of its beak if you see spiky things then its a male if you cant see anything its more probable to be a female...

make sure that you have water for it but not in a container that is too deep cuz it could drown, get special food for it in a store like the Tractors Supply (i hope they have one where you live, or any other store that has livestock food), it can be ground up corn (that you an do yourself by buying whole corn in a grocery store and grinding it) or special chick food for it (more reccomended for small chicks).

at night it can sleep with an old shirt or rag over it so that it can feel like its its mom, if i were you i would get a companion for it so that it can be more happy

when it gets older you can let it outside or inside (your choice) but they love to eat grass and will probably eat all of yours

if you need more help or advice about it add me or email me i have many chickens and can help in almost anything about them! :]

  3. If you care about this animal, why didn't you do your research before you brought him home, to make sure you had everything you needed to keep him alive? :( In addition to shelter he needs a heat lamp--a desk lamp will work temporarily but really he needs a heat lamp made for baby chicks. Baby chick down isn't enough to keep the cold out, he needs a heat lamp to keep him warm until he gets his feathers in. Without it he could get sick and die of cold, no matter how insulated his shelter is.

There isn't really any way to guess at his breed, especially just from a description: there are a lot of breeds that start off as yellow and black-striped. Ask the person you got him from; a feed store should be able to tell you exactly which breeds they have in, and which ones are yellow and black, and a farmer or hobbyist should be able to tell you the breed of the parents.
