Question:

New Brakes and Rotors making noise is that okay?

I have a 2001 Audi A6 Quattro 4.2 and I just had ceramic brake pads and slotted rotors put on the front of my car. Now when I drive I hear this rubbing noise like metal is touching, this happens even when I'm coasting with no brakes applied. The guy that installed them told me to drive it for 2 days but I already did 2 days worth of driving already today about 50 miles and no difference in how it sounds and on my way back home I started to hear that famous squeaking noise you hear when you need to brakes. Is it because there brand new rotors and pads, I think I broke them in already. I seen the guy put the pads on, he applied this red glue or grease to the back of the pad before he installed them. I found the guy on craigslist and he said he knew all about german cars, I'm hoping I didnt waste money going to him, when i could had went to a shop for a couple dollars more. I also told him midas said I need my system bleed but he kept saying no I dont and I also hear air pump when I'm in park constantly pressing the pedal. Let me know what you think.

  1. Ceramic pads on steel rotors is a really bad idea. Who told you to do that? Get regular metallic pads installed. I'm surprised the thing has any brake feel or even stops the way it is now. You wasted your money, but it's your fault. The stock brakes are way more than adequate for street driving. The are designed in a country where the cars are driven safely on the Autobahn for kripes sake. I'm sure your friend will tell you he knows more about the car then the LeMans winning Audi engineers.

  2. sometimes slotted rotors will do that especially when your running ceramic pads,it may take more than 50 miles worth of driving to seat those down properly,id let him know about the problem though and if it continues to do that take it back to him,im sure he,ll repair it the way it should be done, good luck.

  3. Take it back and make him figure it out. I work on cars for a living and I'm around people that get come backs all the time. May be the junk brake lube he used. A lot of that c**p is known to make brakes noisy. A guy at my shop uses wheel bearing grease. Which is basically the same concept and it's a high temp grease. And he has little problems with it.  A hard pad material will be noisy as well.

  4. On a brake pad there is a metal tab to warn you when the pads are getting worn (that famous squeaking noise). These can be bent, and sometimes are in shipping. If it is from all four wheels there is something else wrong. The grease on the back of the pad is to keep the pad from freezing or sticking to the caliper. If you did any research on the rotors you will find that slotted/drilled rotors will produce more noise when braking.

  5. sounds like he used cheap auto zone brake pads and rotors if so then you just need to get a set of audi brake pads but ceramic brake pads are not good for a nice quite ride since they are so hard

  6. If you think hiring a professional is expensive, see how much an amateur costs you! Go to a pro and have them fix it. Lesson learned.
