I had my front brakes done on an 04 alero about 3 weeks ago. Last week they started making a loud screeching noise when i press on them. Also when i am going less than 30 miles an hour the noise start once i speed up it goes away. What could be the problem?

  1. could be the type of brake pads none should squeak... but some do more than others...best you take it back and have who ever done it redo it or check....

  2. Cheaper brake pads are harder than the better ones, which cause this screeching the sound. To remedy this problem, break up an old torch light battery & smear the carbide onto the pads to soften them.after you've roughten them up with sandpaper. It also helps to cut 2 more diagonal grooves on the brake pads.

  3. Sometimes it's because it might be loose or too tight.

It could also be some other problems such as the side or rear bumper.

    Good Luck!

  4. Did you have the brakes repaired by a good brake shop, someone who is knowledgeable about brakes?  They should have put some goop on the back of the brakes which keeps down the screeching.  I've also switched to ceramic brakes which helps keep down the noise.  Sounds like the mechanic didn't do the job right.

  5. If you didn't have the rotors replaced and they were in bad shape then they could have damaged the new brakes to the point that they are causing this noise. My advice is to get them looked at ASAP.

  6. HI

Could it be the back brakes?.. I have heard that front disc brakes well screech and that is why they come with a little paper spacer or sometimes some liquid stuff to put on the backing plate of the pads.. maybe the person that did your brakes didn't use the part so now there making a noise.

    Good Luck

  7. Did you have the rotors replaced as well?  Does the screeching noise go away as you press on the brakes harder? It could be the brakes adjusting to the rotors.

the noise at low speeds could be something else like a bad wheel bearing or tie rod.  Find out exactly which side of the car it is coming from (you may  have to have a passenger in the car to listen for the other side).  I would have a mechanic look at this sooner rather then later.

  8. I would take the vehicle back to where you had the brakes done and have them check it, or if you suspect negligence on their part take it to another mechanic and have them check it.
