New Brunswick Open Chess championship 2011 about to commence
New Brunswick Open Chess championship 2011 is scheduled to commence from tomorrow at St. Thomas University.
The event will last over the weekend and reach its end on Sunday.
The tournament has been able to earn goodwill among the chess players of the province over a period of time and it is looked forward to by most players.
This time around, the chess championship has an added attraction for the chess players as well as the chess fans as the international chess master; Robert Hamilton will also be gracing the tournament by taking part in it.
It will be after a period of 20 years that Hamilton will be taking part in the championship. Hamilton was a chess prodigy as he amazed thousands of people at an early age of 13 by defeating 48 high school students and handed out a defeat to each and every
one of them.
He continued to amaze the country by bagging the national award the next year. This was accomplished after having written an article on chess in the Daily Gleaner.
Roland Chrisjohn, the assistant of the tournament made the following comments about having Hamilton on board, “We're thrilled that a player of Hamilton’s calibre will be competing at the NB Open. He recently placed seventh at the Canadian Closed Championships
and now that he has registered for the NB Open we expect even more players will participate, just to take him on. He's the obvious favorite, but nobody has resigned yet! There will be something for everyone, spectators included, at the tournament. Everyone
with an interest in chess will find players at his or her own level to play, or a suitable underdog to root for.”
The chess tournament will make use of the latest software that serves to analyze chess games. Other than that, the organizers have propped up separate rooms that will serve the purpose of analysis rooms for the players who plan to use them.
A cash prize of $300 will be given to the first position holder while the second and third places will receive $200 and $100 prize money.
