New CBA a Robin Hood for the New York Yankees -MLB Update
The newly signed collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the owners and players in Major League Baseball (MLB) might have been historical and one of a kind, setting an example throughout the world at a time when other sport leagues are facing financial
crises and on the verge of collapse, but for the New York Yankees, things might have just gotten worse.
Just like the scene in Robin Hood, the CBA will now tax the rich and give it to the poor, making the New York Yankees one of the top ranked teams on the list of franchises that loves to overspend whenever they get a chance to.
“It’s like every other agreement: take from the rich and give to the poor,’’ said a long time follower of baseball’s labour history to the New York Post.
Due to overspending on signing players in the drafts or later on, the MLB has the authority according to the new agreement to either tax teams with a luxury tax or tax them along with eliminating their draft picks, which according to them will let other
teams pick top picks as well without having to spend top dollar in order to secure a player.
The MLB, in a nutshell, is moving towards eliminating the bidding culture in the league which allows the richest teams to take advantage while the teams with less of an income lose out on some big opportunities.
“Looking at this thing, there is nothing good in it for the clubs who write checks — the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies,’’ a source for the Post said.
Looking at the previous signings by the New York Yankees like Austin Jackson, Joba Chamberlain, Dellin Betances, Austin Romine and Mason Williams, the team has had its hands full over the past few seasons along with writing a number of fat checks in each
case, but now that all will be changing.
“MLB didn’t like teams giving draft picks a lot of money or teams going crazy in Latin America,’’ an AL executive said.
What all these sanctions will result in still cannot be predicted but will only become visible once they come into play.
