  1. most chickens don't liked to be picked up.

  2. Let them go without food for one day. The next day get a short stool or a buck and sit down and start tossing corn to them. Only toss a couple kernels at a time. At first toss them out five or six foot from your feet. Then as they get more used to  grabbing the corn and learning the new game, you can toss it a little closer to yourself. Just continue this until you have the walking in and around your feet. Then it is just a matter of sticking your hand out and getting them used to your touch. You need to be careful of what you wish for. It is hard as all get out to walk with a flock of chickens walking in between your feet. ;-)

  3. We hatch out and raise chickens, you will find that they won't be big on being handled. They will follow you from time to time but unless you research a breed that makes a good bet you normally don't get a lap bird but it is possible.  We had a bantam that the kids got mad at always getting in the middle of their ball games and when one kid got out his bike she would get on the handle bars to go for a ride she was a "one kid bird" never far behind him.  The breed that they have nicknamed the "Easter egg chicken" (araucana) I believe is the breed is very affectionate we had just one and if you sat in a lawn chair she would come running and jump up on your lap she was carried all the time, and would try to run the dog off if it was getting attention from one of us.  She was not accepted by the rest of the chickens and took over the dog house.

  4. I used to have chickens, just spend time with them and get them used to being picked up, eating out of your hand will be easy because most animals do anythin for food.

  5. It will take some time. After a few weeks they will recognise that you look after them and will follow you. hold out some corn and let them eat from your hand. dont grab and pick them up yet as they will remain fearful. i have 28 hens and most of them were ex-battery. they refused to be touched or picked up but after 6-8 weeks they trusted me and they will now come over to me if i sit in their area. Its lovely.

Just give them time and let them settle in. sit in their pen or area so they realise you are not to be feared and offer them food from your hand
