Question:

New Driver - Everything Right?

by  |  earlier

I got a new driver similar to my older one. Only difference is it has moveable weights and is 10 degrees instead of 10.5. Everything was going way right on me. It is a draw driver like my other one. All my irons and 3 wood was drawing as usual, go back to the driver and way right. I was told my shaft before was Stiff, so I got the same thing. Is it possible my shaft is too stiff? Should I try to take it to a golf pro shop and get the two measured on a launch angle? Any ideas??

I do hit some right time to time with my old driver, but normally hit a stright to draw shot.

  1. Sounds like you just need some getting used to the driver.  It's probably a different weight then your old one and the club head is probably different.  It just means your 'open' at impact  a little.  Maybe you're older driver was easier for you to turn over quicker etc..  I'd just setup with a slightly 'closed' club face and 'strengthen' your grip slightly when you hit your driver.  From the nature of your question you probably have one of the r7 drivers so just set it up to the 'draw' weight structure and leave it there.  You'll get the hand of the new driver soon enough.  And no, I don't think that your shaft being too stiff is going to be the only thing that is causing you to slice your balls.

  2. I think the Key spec you mentioned is that it is longer than your old driver......due to the length increase you may not be getting the face square at impact.

  3. Unless the shaft is the exact same shaft as before in your older driver, it is going to do different things.  There are plenty more variables that go into a shaft besides just flex.  There is kickpoint, torque, etc...

Also, different shaft brands have different aspects of what they deem "stiff."  Does the shaft feel more whippy when you swing the club, because if so it is probably a soft stiff, which a couple of companies are known for.  Some companies are known for have hard stiffs, it just depends on what kind of shaft it is.  Most likely, you just have the factory shaft in the club, which almost all factory shafts play as a soft stiff.  My recommendation is to spend some extra money, go buy a nice shaft such as a graffaloy, aldila, fujikura, mitsubishi, UST, etc..  and then see what the club feels like.  If you still hate the club, then sell it with the upgraded shaft and you will get more money for it.

  4. The flex of the shaft should be determined by your swing speed.  A pro shop or sporting goods store that has a launch monitor ought to be able to measure your swing speed.

  5. 10

  6. the length of your driver and possibly the swing weight is most likely your problem the extra inch that you stated  and weight is hindering you from getting square. you may try putting the ball forward in you stance or cutting the shaft down to the length you are used to.

  7. If your shaft is too stiff you are probably just pushing all your tee shots.  I guess it also doesn't help that you dropped degrees on your driver which actually might add more side spin (but only .5 degree shouldn't cause that much more sidespin).

I think the problem might lie in your golf swing, you might be coming way over the top on your drives which puts all your balls out to the right (with a fade or slice).  you say your irons are drawing, but with that same swing path and a little more of a shut face, you can definately produce a draw.  To fix this, work your swing path from in to out, instead of straight up and down.

I hope that you undstood all that, and i hope that its somewhat helpful.

  8. is it possible the weights aren't weighted right?  Also, I was told the difference in the shafts for stiff, reguluar, etc, was swing speed.  Is it possible the new driver is heavier or lighter and thats is effecting your swing speed?

  9. yeah!

  10. duuuuuuuuude dats so kwwwl =D

  11. with the advances made in graphite shafts , they are playing closer to thier rated flex . the store should have fitted you on a launch moniter . a mistake has been made . a 46 inch shaft . is too long , it requires different ball position . and distance from ball at adress . these are very good clubs . try to see what the launch monitor says . the patteren you described indicates the shafy is too stiff . good luck

  12. well usaly when your shaft is too stiff you will pull or hook the ball unless you are just blocking everything out but if I was you i would go to the golf store our your pro shop at your local golf course and ask the pro  what he thinks it is kinda hard to tell you what is wrong if iv never seen your swing or anything
