New England Patriots QB Tom Brady wishes he didn't say he "sucked" after AFC Championship game - NFL News
He may be one of the biggest sports stars on the planet but New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is also his own biggest critics.
After winning a close fought American Football Conference (AFC) title game against Baltimore Ravens every New England Patriots player was celebrating except Brady.
The quarterback told the press pack after the game that he had sucked, as he threw two interceptions during the game in a statement that went on air to a national audience.
"Well I sucked pretty bad today but our defence saved us," Brady said.
On Wednesday, however, the quarterback had a change of heart and regretted giving out such a statement on National television.
"I wish I didn't say it because I didn't want to take away from what the team had accomplished, and certainly we had accomplished a lot to get to this point in this season, to beat a very good team in the AFC championship, to fight back like we did. We were
down in that game.”
The Patriots won their AFC Championship encounter 23-20 after coming back into the game from a 20-16 deficit.
This time Brady did not perform at his usual best as he threw two interceptions and passed for zero touchdowns, yet saved New England’s season with a late fourth quarter 1-yard rush to the end-zone, flying over the Ravens' defensive wall to score the crucial
points.
The win took the Patriots to a game against the New York Giants on the biggest stage of them all.
Any other quarterback would have been rightly proud of that moment but Brady, ever the perfectionist, was not happy and even told the Patriots' owner, Robert Kraft, that he will be much better in the Super Bowl.
"I feel like when you play a particular game like I did a couple weeks ago, quarterbacks never try to turn the ball over," he said.
"If there is one thing that correlates more to winning games, it's turnovers. To turn the ball over two times like I did, I didn't feel like it was my best performance."
The quarterback has had a brilliant 2011-12 season as he powered the Patriots back to the Super Bowl for the sixth time under Coach Bill Belichick.
It has been four years since the Patriots last made it to this grand stage, but now they have made it back to bring the Lombardi Trophy home.
