New England Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski optimistic about playing in Super Bowl – NFL News Update
New England Patriots’ Tight end, Rob Gronkowski appeared quite optimistic on media day Tuesday, about his return to the team for the Super Bowl game.
“I’m just going day by day, every single day, just working with the training staff, and whatever the training staff wants me to do, that’s what I’m doing. I want to be out there with the team, obviously. I want to help out the team.” Gronkowski said.
The news is good as Gronkowski who earlier on was wearing a walking boot shunned it on Monday. Gronkowski had missed the practice last Wednesday on January 25 and had been listed as DNP (Did Not Practice) in the Patriots' injury report.
Gronkowski had developed a high left ankle sprain in Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 22.
The game resulted in Patriots victory and their rush to the Super Bowl but their tight end sustained an injury towards the end of the third quarter of the game as he took a 23-yard reception. The incident made him walk out of the ground temporarily, though
he soon returned to the field with a “re-taped” ankle.
Boston Herald had then reported that Gronkowski went through ligament damage in his left ankle.
Gronkowski caused a lot of concern by missing practice earlier on but is now optimistic about his return to the team.
"I'm improving every day," Gronkowski said. "The only reason it's getting so blown up is because it's the Super Bowl. It's just like any other injury during any other week."
Gronkowski’s presence in the Super Bowl is of immense importance to the Patriots as he has proven to be a valuable player since he joined the team in 2010.
He currently holds the National Football League (NFL) record for most number of touchdowns by a tight end.
He has had 90 receiving this season for 1,327 yards with 17 touchdowns to his credit. In his first year with the Patriots, Gronkowski had 42 receptions for 546 yards.
Gronkowski took 10 catches for 145 yards and three touchdowns against the Denver Broncos and finished with five receptions for 87 yards against the Ravens.
Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady too appeared hopeful that Gronkowski would make it this Sunday, saying he has made a lot of progress.
The Patriots would be facing the New York Giants in the Super Bowl game on the 5th of February, in Indianapolis.
Gronkowski said he was working on a day-to-day basis with the training staff to ensure a quick recovery.
