New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski goes under the knife, 10-weeks recovery - NFL News
According to sources, New England Patriots tight end and first time All-Pro, Rob Gronkowski has undergone an ankle surgery on Friday.
The 22-year-old was suffering from a high ankle sprain and did not take part in any practice sessions before Super Bowl XLVI to protect it from further harm.
Gronkowski, however, played in the big event that New England eventually lost 21-17 to New York Giants.
The tight end took to the field wearing special protective shoes during the game, but his contribution throughout was limited.
He commented after the game that he was performing at 100% but his efforts during the game suggested otherwise.
“I was good. I was 100 percent out there doing everything they asked me to do".
The main moment for Gronkowski in the game was during the final seconds when he jumped to collect a Hail Mary pass from quarterback Tom Brady in the end-zone.
Giants’ defensemen, though made sure that Gronkowski did not successfully make the catch and forced an incompletion, leading to New York’s victory.
Gronkowski will be going through the recovery phase after the surgery for further 10-weeks but will be ready to take part in Patriots’ offseason.
The tight end had been embroiled in controversy the past week as video footage emerged of him dancing and jumping around in a party a few hours after the Patriots' devastating loss, with the ankle injury not hampering his moves one bit.
Though fans and ex-players have expressed anger and disappointment over his actions, Patriots’ President, Jonathan Kraft does not see what all the fuss is about.
"He's a young single guy. I'm not sure that Rob ... I think he does everything, and then some. And he brings huge time, energy and passion to that.”
Adding further, Kraft said,
"As 21- and 22-year-old guys grow up and mature, different things happen. He hasn't broken any laws. I think it's hard to place value judgments on things that are personally right for different people."
Patriots’ fans will just hope that after surgery Gronkowski performs at the same level next season, while also maintaining his ability to bust some moves on the dance floor.
