New England Patriots’ Tom Brady named NFL Offensive Player of the Year
After winning The Associated Press’ Offensive Player of the Year award back in 2007, New England Patriots’ Tom Brady has won it again in a landslide with his incredible performance during the 2010 National Football League regular season.
In second place was Philadelphia Eagles’ quarter-back Michael Vick with 11 votes, whereas Brady received 21 votes out of a possible 50. The Patriots had a 14-2 record and clinched the highest playoff seed for their division, getting the benefit of a first
week bye and home field advantage. However, they lost in their first playoff game against the New York Jets, who later went on to lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Brady has set two records this season in passing. One for his 355 consecutive passes without an interception and the other with his nine consecutive games with no interceptions and at least two touchdown passes per game. The previous consecutive pass record
holder was Bernie Kosar with 308 and Don Meredith held the consecutive games record with 6.
On 4 October, 2010 Brady also became the quickest player to help his reach 100 regular season wins. He also broke Brett Favre’s record of winning 26 successive home games in the regular season, after defeating the Jets on 6 December, 2010.
When he was interviewed about the award, Brady also spoke about his surgery that took place a couple of weeks ago to his right foot. His navicular bone had a s***w inserted in it to keep his stress fracture from turning into a full fracture. Sources said
that he was doing fine after the operation.
"I had surgery about a week ago, actually about 10 days ago; it's just something that's been lingering a little bit," Brady said.
"Over the course of the season, a lot of players throughout the league, a lot of players on our team deal with these type of injuries," he continued. "Part of having a little bit of mental toughness is putting those things aside and still going out and trying
to perform your best each week. I have a great training staff and my friend Alex [Guerrero] that works with me weekly. I'm in great hands and they were able to get me out on the field feeling good and I was able to go out there and help our team win the AFC
East, which we're all very proud of."
Brady is still having a bit of trouble walking around in a walking boot that offers structural integrity to his right foot.
He was also the uncontested choice to be selected to the All-Pro team and has thrown for 3,900 yards through the air this season. He has thrown only one interception for every nine touchdowns that he has thrown, which is a ratio of 9:1. Brady had 36 touchdown
passes with only four interceptions, becoming the first quarter-back in NFL history that has had a 6:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio for even one season. He set the record back in 2007, when he had a 6.25:1 ratio.
Brady has played better in 2007, when he threw 50 touchdown passes, leading the Patriots to an undefeated season. However, the Patriots did not win the Super Bowl in both 2007 and this year, 2010, but have won the Super Bowl three times. They won Super Bowl
XXXVI, XXXVII and XXXIX and Brady was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player for two of those games. He was also selected to the Pro Bowl six times, in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010. Brady was due to start in the 2010 Pro Bowl, but did not participate
because of his foot surgery.
Brady has also been named The Associated Press’ Male Athlete of the Year and NFL Most Valuable Player in 2007 and is the Patriots’ all time leader in touchdown passes.
