New England Patriots’ Tom Brady wins Most Valuable Player award (Part 1)
Can New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady get any better? He was named The Associated Press’ Offensive Player of the Year in a landslide last week and received all 50 votes for The Associated Press’ Most Valuable Player (MVP) on Sunday.
The star quarterback became the first player in National Football League’s (NFL) history to win the MVP award unanimously. He broke his own record of the most number of votes received by a player when he won his first MVP award back in 2007; 49 of the possible votes went to Brady while one lonely vote went to Brett Favre.
"It is always flattering to be chosen for such a prestigious award," Brady said. "But I also look at it as a team award, as nothing in football gets accomplished without the mental toughness and determination of every player and coach associated with that team.
"I am very humbled to be a part of an organization where winning comes first, and our goals are based around the success of the team."
Although Brady did not perform as well this year as he did in 2007, he was by far the league’s best player in the 2010-11 season, leading the Pats to a 14-2 regular season record - the best in the league. He threw for 3,200 yards and 36 touchdowns while throwing only four interceptions; a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 9:1. He broke his own 6:1 ratio that he set in the 2007 season. This season, he ended his streak of 335 consecutive passes without a single interception.
However, Brady does not compare this season to any of his previous ones.
He becomes the only Patriot to ever win the MVP award, trying his best to get more than his rival; New York Giants’ quarterback Peyton Manning. In the past four years, both Brady and Manning have won two of the four MVP awards given, even though Manning has won the award twice before in 2003 and 2004.
He followed his 2007 MVP season with a fall from the top. In the first half of the first game of the 2008 season, Brady tore ligaments in his left knee, ending his chance at a successive MVP award. He made a decent return in 2009, although he was impaired by injuries to his ribs and hand.
He then came back in the 2010 season, seeking a Super Bowl win. Even though they lost in the divisional round of the play-offs to the New York Jets, he has had an incredible season. 12 of his 16 season games ended with him having a passer rating of over 100.
