New England Patriots WR Wes Welker considering holding out from training camp - NFL News
New England Patriots wide receiver, Wes Welker is considering holding out from the Patriots training camp as he seeks a new long-term deal with the franchise.
The Patriots have tagged Welker to stop him from entering free agency but the receiver has yet to sign the franchise tender as he awaits moves from the franchise to provide him with a new deal.
Speaking in a radio interview on Tuesday, Welker said that he deserves a new long-term deal after giving his best to the Patriots.
"Through my body of work, through the past five years, I think what I've done I've earned a long-term deal. It's what I am looking for and what I want. Hopefully that's the case and hopefully we come to something where we can make that happen."
Welker had a wonderful 2011-12 season as he put up some amazing statistics both in the regular and postseason campaigns.
However, the wide receiver was culpable in the Patriots Super Bowl XLVI defeat to the New York Giants as he dropped what could have been the game winning catch in the final quarter.
Welker covered 1,569 receiving yards last season from 122 receptions and scored nine touchdowns to help the Patriots power their way into the postseason.
Adding further he said that the Patriots had not contacted him after assigning the tender but he hopes that the franchise works with him after the drafts.
"I'm sure with the draft and everything else, there's a lot of other things that kind of take place and you know how coach Belichick works ... right now he's in draft mode. And I'm sure after the draft, you know, hopefully we're able to come together and
hopefully figure something out."
Welker has held out of the Patriots voluntary workouts and said that he would not have any other leverage except to hold out of training camp if the Patriots do not provide him with a new contract as he seeks long-term security.
Hopefully both parties can work out something as Welker remains one of the best receivers in the Patriots line-up and will be a big part of New England’s 2012-13 campaign.
