New England Patriots WR Wes Welker talks about contract stalemate - NFL News
New England Patriots wide receiver, Wes Welker has still not received a new long-term contract from his franchise but the player on Monday put an end to speculations that he might hold out.
The wide receiver was tagged by the Patriots in the offseason to keep him from reaching free agency and both parties continue to negotiate on a new deal.
If Welker does not receive a new long-term deal the player could sign the tag which will pay him a guaranteed $ 9.5 million for the season.
Speaking in a radio interview, Welker said that he would like to join up with his teammates during the mandatory minicamp.
"I think we're still kind of waiting, but I'd really like to be there. I don't know. To say I'm going one way or another right now, I'm not going to say it's definite or anything like that, but I would definitely like to be at those minicamps for sure."
Adding further he said.
"There are 9.5 million reasons why I wouldn't miss any regular-season games,"
Welker went on to add that he has no hard feelings for the Patriots and is looking forward to helping the team in the new season.
"I don't think there are any sort of hard feelings on my side or their side. I think we're all looking forward to the 2012 season and hopefully do some big things there,"
Welker had a brilliant 2011-12 season as he helped lead the Patriots to the Super Bowl XLVI. The 31-year-old racked up the highest receptions overall in the league with 122 for a gain of 1,569 yards and also scored nine touchdowns.
However, his brilliant form deserted him at the Super Bowl when he dropped what looked like an easy catch in the fourth quarter which ended what was looking like the Patriots winning drive.
That dropped catch turned the whole game around as the New York Giants led by quarterback, Eli Manning drove forward to score a winning touchdown and lift the Lombardi Trophy.
Both sides will be looking to agree to a new long term deal soon and end the uncertainty surrounding Welker’s future at the franchise.
