New England Patriots’ Wes Welker wants to stay with Patriots – NFL News Update
New England Patriots’ wide receiver, Wes Welker is desirous of staying with the same team rather than switch sides after his contract with the Patriots expires this year.
Welker formerly played for the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins before joining the Patriots in 2007. He has since then stayed with the Patriots proving to be an important part of the Patriots' offense.
He has had 122 receptions for 1,569 yards this season along with nine touchdowns which turns out to be his career’s best performance.
He has had a total of 650 receptions for 7,226 yards in his career, thus proving to be one of the best wide receivers in the National Football League (NFL).
Welker currently leads the NFL in receptions. In the past five years he has had 554 receptions.
Earlier with the Dolphins and the Chargers, he never had more than 100 receptions in a single season.
Welker had signed a five-year, $18 million deal with the Patriots that would soon expire.
However, the 30-year-old player intends to come back to the team, though at this stage he would not discuss that, preferring to rather concentrate on the upcoming Super Bowl event.
Patriots would be facing New York Giants, coming Monday in the Super Bowl game, in Indianapolis.
“I plan on being back so I’m not really too worried about that right now. You know, I’m fully concentrated on this game.” Welker said.
Welker though would want to pick up on this matter after the game is over.
“This is all stuff we can address at another point. It can be a story after the seasons over but right now we’re just concentrating on this game and what we have to do to win this game.” Welker said.
Patriots Coach, Bill Belichick commending Welker said that he was difficult to get along as it was difficult to coach him but the quarterbacks that included both the Dolphins and Patriots' team had great confidence in throwing at him.
He termed Welker a “good addition” to the Patriots' team.
Patriots’ owner, Robert Kraft too wants Welker to stay in the team.
He termed Welker an “important” and “special” player in the team, hoping that an agreement would be reached by the Patriots with him after the season ends.
"I think Wes wants to be here and we want him here," Kraft said.
The Patriots may put a franchise tag on the player in case an extension is not reached with him in a bid to ensure he stays with the team.
