New England Patriots offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer returns to field – NFL News
After having a season full of injuries, offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer had his first practice session in New England Patriots training camp on Wednesday, August 22, 2012.
It was the first of two joint practice sessions Patriots will have with Tampa Bay Buccaneers before playing the preseason game on Friday.
Vollmer had an injury-plagued 2011 season as he missed most of the season due to his foot and back injury.
Vollmer expressed his pleasure on returning to the field. He said:
"It feels good to get some stuff done, It's humid, but luckily it's not as hot."
Although Vollmer did not participate in the team drills, he did manage to participate in 1-on-1.
Vollmer currently has no fixed date set to return to the field. He will continue to work alongside the medical staff who will decide how much strain he can contain. Vollmer said:
"I have no idea. I'm obviously making progress, working as hard as I can, and if i'm ready, I'm ready. If I'm not, I'm not. I'm obviously hoping so and doing whatever I can to do it."
Vollmer started the offseason training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. He was put in the first team right away as he played at the right tackle position in place of Marcus Cannon.
Even though both the tackles struggled miserably during the first two preseason games, offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia was satisfied with the performance of the two youngsters.
Vollmer admitted that coming back to full fitness while regaining form is a massive task which will need some tough workouts and training. He said:
“It’s a grind. Obviously, you’ve got to take care of your body and do some things. You want to be out there, help your teammates, play with your team and get ready, so it’s a good feeling to be back out here. Injuries are part of the game, you deal with
it.”
Patriots drafted Vollmer in the second round (58th overall pick) in the 2009 draft. Vollmer was not the only one who returned to the field for Patriots, Spencer Larsen and Alfonzo Dennard also came back on the field after spending some time out
due to respective injuries.
