New England Patriots seek to land Vincent Jackson in trade with the San Diego Chargers
A trusted source for Comcast SportsNet has confirmed that the New England Patriots have engaged in preliminary talks which might lead to the team bringing San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson to the Patriots in exchange for Pro Bowl
offensive guard Logan Mankins.
The negotiations are still in their early stages, and the New England Patriots are looking into other possibilities.
The rumours are not surprising, given the obvious fact that the Patriots are in the market for a receiver after trading Randy Moss to the Minnesota Vikings earlier in the week.
Vincent Jackson would be seen as an ideal replacement for Moss, as they both possess a similar skill set, the main exception being that Jackson is five years younger than Moss.
Both Jackson and Mankins are also currently in similar contractual situations where neither one has actually signed with their team (each one is still holding out for more money), and neither has seen any action so far this season.
A media source in San Diego has reported that the Chargers have no interest in dealing for the six-year pro, Mankins, and that the Chargers, if they were to deal Jackson, would be more interested in dealing for high order draft picks.
A further stumbling block in the deal could be the fact that according to league rules, a player has to be under contract in order to be traded, which means that Jackson would have to sign his restricted free agent tender before any deal could go through.
Furthermore, Jackson was placed by the Chargers on the roster-exempt list, meaning he would have to sit out three games if he does sign or is traded.
Jackson has played his entire career for the San Diego Chargers and has had over 1000 yards receiving in each of the last two seasons.
