New England Patriots thrash New York Jets by 49-19 in Week 12 – NFL Recap
It was a happening occasion for New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as he got his 200th victory in the league after his team ripped apart New York Jets in a 49-19 victory in Week 12 game on Thursday, November 22, 2012, at MetLife Stadium,
East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The game got off to a dull start, but things changed drastically as Patriots offence went through a fling of touchdowns which ended up with Patriots leading by 35 points.
These 35 points were fourth most put up by a team during a quarter in the history of the National Football League (NFL). Patriots scored a remarkable three touchdowns in the span of 52 seconds during the second quarter.
The game also put a seal on the faith of dismal Jets who are now almost certain to miss the playoffs as they are currently stacked at third position in the American Football Conference (AFC) East with a 4-7 record.
It was a series of good plays by quarterback Tom Brady and spell of mistakes by Jets defence that led to Patriots scoring four touchdowns in six minutes. According to the Associated Press, Belichick said:
"I was unfortunately on the other side of that in a Pro Bowl where they scored on a fumble, then an interception. It doesn't take a lot to score like that, defensive touchdowns, special teams, they can add up in a hurry. Nothing surprises me in the NFL."
Brady threw three touchdown passes and also scored a rushing touchdown. He completed 18 out of 28 passes for 323 yards with a quarterback rating of 82.4.
It was another disappointing game for Jets fans as they shouted for backup quarterback Tim Tebow to be on the field.
As the team left the ground at the end of first half, it was booed by the fans for lacklustre performance. Talking after the game, Jets head coach Rex Ryan said:
"Discouraged? Of course. I'll put it to you this way: We're about as wounded as you possibly can be, but we're not dead."
Both teams looked cagy in the first quarter and failed to score a single point. However, the scenario soon changed in the second quarter when Tom Brady threw a three-yard pass to wide receiver Wes Welker to score a touchdown.
This was followed by another superb 83-yard pass which was caught by running back Shane Vereen to take the score to 14-0.
Then defensive back Steve Gregory returned a fumble for 32 yards to score a touchdown. Jets fumbled again nine seconds later, which was returned by Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman to the end zone as the score went 28-0.
Then another touchdown from Brady gave Patriots a 35-0 lead. Jets opened their scoring chart towards the end of first half with a field goal to finish with 3-35.
The third quarter saw Jets reducing the lead to 12-35, thanks to a safety and a touchdown. Patriots went on to score two rushing touchdowns in the final quarter. Sanchez scored a touchdown in the final minutes, but it was too late as Patriots won by 49-19.
