New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker happy for Aaron Hernandez getting a deal – NFL News
Wide receiver Wes Welker looks to be standing in a position he never thought he would be in after giving his best-ever performance last season.
Having locked their outstanding tight end Robert Gronkowski for a massive six-year deal, New England Patriots have now given Aaron Hernandez a deal worth $40 million.
Welker showed his happiness while congratulating Hernandez for getting the deal on Tuesday, August 28, 2012. He said:
"Good for him. I'm definitely happy for him, he’s a great player and done a lot of great things for us and it's good to have him here."
Although Welker has shown calmness about this issue, he does understand the consequences it will have on his talks about getting a deal.
Welker has been asking Patriots for a long-term deal but the Patriots have put up a $9.5 million franchise tender on him.
After inking Gronkowski for a deal worth staggering $54 million, Welker was looking for a similar type of deal. When Welker was asked about getting a long-term deal, he said:
"I think you have to ask coach (Bill) Belichick that, I'm just going out here trying to do my job the best of my ability and let everything else take care of itself."
Ever since joining Patriots five years ago, Welker has been their most phenomenal player in the offensive team. In the last five seasons, Welker has caught the highest number of passes in the entire league.
Welker put up his career-best performance last season, receiving 122 passes while covering 1,569 passing yards.
Last season, Welker got the top position in the number of receptions while finishing second in yards coverage behind Calvin Johnson.
There is a possibility that Patriots might again put up a franchise tender on Welker come the 2013 season.
In last few years, many of Patriots outstanding players have left the franchise in order to get a better deal. They include players like Richard Seymour and Deion Branch.
Welker might have to follow the path of these players, if he does not get a good response from the team he loves to play for.
