New England WR Wes Welker clarifies comments after Denver Broncos game - NFL News
Whenever players make any slightly controversial comment to the media even as a joke it is likely that their statements will be analysed and taken apart by many analysts who will all reach different conclusions.
This is the main reason many players employ their own PR managers to keep their image clean and take care of any controversies.
New England Patriots wide receiver, Wes Welker found that out recently.
The wide receiver played a big part in the Patriots 31-21 win over the Denver Broncos in week 5 as he scored a touchdown and made 13 receptions for 104 yards.
After the game he was asked whether he enjoyed playing a critical part in the Patriots win. Welker replied with a joke at Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s expense.
He said:
"Yeah, it's kind of nice to stick it in Bill's face once in a while. So this is definitely a good one."
His words were given big airplay by the Boston media and Welker made the inevitable clarification on Monday when he told the media that the statement was just a joke and nothing more than that.
He also said that he and coach Belichick enjoyed a close relationship.
Speaking to the media he said:
"It was a joke. I don't know what to else say about it ... Bill and I have a good relationship."
Coach Belichick was also asked about Welker’s statement on Monday but the coach dismissed the question by saying:
"You should ask (Welker) about it then, what he meant by it. I don't know."
Tom E. Curran who covers the New England Patriots for Comcast Sports Net wrote on his Twitter feed.
“Hearing Wes Welker feels badly his "stick it in Bill's face" comment causing a stir. Joke aimed at Ty Law, Troy Brown who were in studio”
Law and Brown are both former players for the Patriots and were present at Comcast Studios when Welker made the joke aimed for them.
The wide receiver will now likely be more careful with what he says to the media and will refrain from making jokes on air about his coach.
