Ok well i know someone whos mare had a baby boy. But the mare has an infection from giving birth, and is being treated, and might not make it. She is also running low on milk.

They cant seem to get the foal to drink from the bottle. I suggested hunny on fingers, then on bottle. So i will see if that works.

Do you have any other tips or secrets to get them to drink. Other wise they are going to use a serge or something that the vet will have to do.

and please pray that mare makes it.

  1. The foal probably doens't know what the bottle is. Make sure that the milk is warm like it would be from the mother. Try to dribble some milk around the baby's mouth and put some on the nipple of the bottle. I assume that the baby is in the same stall as the mother. If not then I would try to put it there to nurse from the bottle. Good luck.

  2. The mare probably retained the placentia and foundered.  It's a tough deal.

You've used a bottle, what about a bucket?  I had a TB mare who couldn't supply a lot of milk and I supplemented with foal lac in a bucket.

  3. put honey on the tip of the bottle. it should work. or soak the t*t of the bottle in honey and that should do it.

I will pray for the mare.

  4. yep...use a bucket...a lot safer for the foal and a lot neater to.

I hope your mare makes it. Ok...friends mare. I hope she gets better.

  5. Hi well don't panic you still have to wean the baby foal why dont you try finding a adoptive mare that has her own foal she might be help and you really should not drain the moms energy.

  6. Just to make sure that you get something down the colt, I would give it some electrolytes and use a syringe (without the needle) and push some into the side of his mouth...head down so that it doesn't run back too quickly and choke him...then give him some milk the same way.    You can buy (at most farm supply stores) canned mare's milk that contains colostrum so that the baby gets some, that will help give him a better start.  Once you get the foal to liking the milk and l*****g the end of the syringe, just bring the syringe down and under milk that you have in a bucket....once his mouth touches the milk, he will l**k it and eventually drink it.  Good luck.

  7. try getting the moms smell by rubbig the t*t of the bottle on the moms t*t. I did that and it worked, hopefully it will help. poor mare! best of luck with her!
