New GI Bill BAH question?

My husband today posed the question for BAH and the new GI Bill.. Do they pay the landlord directly, like they do the schools? Or do they just give you that money monthly and you can pay for housing yourself? Also, will they give you the full E-5 with dependents amount even if your housing isn't that much? Thanks!

  1. Is he Active Duty and an E-5 or is he out of the service and going back to school?

No, you get the money and you pay the landlord.

Along with BHA, you might also get a separate VHA (Variable Housing Allowance) that will give you additional monies for housing.

  2. The BAH for an E-5 with dependants  is just an arbitrary way of determining how much you should get paid based on your zip code. This will go directly to you and serve as your pay check. Remember that it does not go into effect until aug. 2009, but the regular (Chp. 30) benefit has been increased by 20% for august of this year.

  3. Your BAH goes into your paycheck. half will be on the 1st and half will post on the 15th, along with your regular earnings. You will be responsible for paying your land lord.

If your rent or mortgage is less than the BAH allowance, you pocket the extra.

But, your land lord may contact your supervisors if you are late on your payments, or if you damage the property.

  4. They will pay you the money, just like they pay you your VA Ed benefits..

The amount is a set amount, the new VFW magazine, says it is $1,100 a month.

Of course, they havn't wrote the regulations for any of it yet.

And it doesn't go into effect untill aug 1st 2009.
