I just got an adorable new horse. her previous owners never put shoes on her and didn't take her to the vet's when she got tangled in barbed wire and she now has a scar that has made her lame. we had the farrier come out, but i wasn't there for him to tell me if i would be able to ride her. i know it sounds like a bad horse to buy, so please don't tell me that. will i be able to ride her?

  1. you should go to different vets to get more than one opinion if youll be able to ride her

  2. You need to get a vet check. He  or she should be able to tell you if you can ride her.

  3. Well i would get the vet to tell you. I wouldnt ride her until they tell you its ok.

A horse doensnt need shoes. My horse hasnt had them her whole life and she is 18.

  4. A new Horse. As soon as possible. Please get the Vet out, and check on that barb wire, as she could still have wire in her legs. It doesn't sound like a bad horse to buy. I love it when Horses are Blessed to go to a better and loving home as yours is.

Will she lift her hoofs up for you? As the Wife of a Farrier. We always ask' Horse owners to train your horse to be shod.

Lifting and cleaning hoofs on a daily grooming regime. After removing all dirt, and manure. Lightly tap on top of hoofs with a light hammer, or even your Hoof pick.

Before farrier arrives, make sure Horse can be cross tied. Spray for flies, and make sure Horse is fed. Keep all children and dogs out of sight!

Make this a pleasant time for you, and your new baby, and reward her with a treats, every time she lets you pick up her hoofs.

Ask the Vet after all barb wire is completely removed before riding. You can also check for barb wire with a huge magnet, or just good eye sight. I wish I had a picture of her legs, to see how bad this is.

Plus, please have her Tetanus Toxoid as soon as possible, and all other vaccination's!

Shame on the people that use to own her.

At this time, I would just let her get use to her new environment and to you. Brush and baby her for now. You'll be riding soon!

    I wish you the best!

  5. You need a little more info on the lame leg. Like what it looks like, can you walk, trot, canter her without limping or hurting herself even more.

  6. A seller will tell you anything to get you to buy their horse. I would seriously doubt that a scar would be the cause of a lame horse. The injury would have to have been a very bad one if the wound has healed and she is still limping. Get your vet to check it out before you get on her back. You could do further damage to her. A horse does not limp for nothing, it is a signal that something is wrong.

  7. Get a vet to come out and give her a check up. I would be able to know if i was up close and personal to the horse but obviously im not, but if you can't get a vet to come out for a few days becuase of a busy schedule, i would be safe and not ride her. It could be dangerous. Hope This Helps!!

  8. is she doesn't stay lame , then yes

and i'm not sure what you can do to help her lameness because i've never delt with that but maybe try looking up thing about lame horses online and see if there are any medications or anything that will help her

i know my neighbors qh mare went lame they walked her a couple time a week, and stalled her the rest of the time, and gave her some kind of medication or something and treated her leg everyday! within 8 months they were riding her again

  9. Check with the vet to be sure. I wouldnt trust people on Yahoo! answers to give you a correct answer for this question. Sorry!!

    :(

  10. Get an xray on it... if a horse is lame sometime it doesn't hurt them to do the simple stuff, nothing to hard or fast, just be easy. If they vet tells you or the xray shows that its deep and might hurt her then listen because you dont want to ruin her for life. But if you can ride just think of it as like your connected to her, if she hurts then you hurt. Treat it as if is was your leg...

    She would do the same.

Good Luck  Hope it works out!
