New Hot water tank, now intermittent hot water in shower.?

I replaced a 15-year old HW Tank in my cottage with a new unit. No other plumbing was changed - cut the old one out, dropped the new one in, that's it. We get good hot water everywhere in the house...except the shower which is the first thing plumbed off the HW line coming from the tank!

When the shower runs, it starts good, then after about a minute it loses pressure and loses the hot water - cold is fine. After about 30 seconds, the hot water picks back up again, and you are good for another minute or two. Then the cycle starts again.

Seems to me since the rest of the house is getting good HW, the fact that we changed the tank is irrelevant, and the issue is the shower valve.... or am i missing something.

  1. you may have dislodged some debri during the new installation.

And it is most likely thsat your cartridge in the shower valve has been clogged up. You will need to turn of the water to the home, and remove the  shower valve and clean or replace the cartridge in the valve itself.

  2. Sounds to me the only thing that changed was the temperature. I'll bet there is an anti scald device inside your shower faucet. Try turning the heat down a little and see if this works. Good luck.

Turn the temp down at the new water heater.
