New House...leak??

Question

We(my parents) just bought a new house and there is a wet spot on our rug. We have no idea what it is, but it is beginning to stink like something is rotten. We don't know if it is the rain, or the toilet/washing machine(which are in the general area). My dad went in the crawl space which is under the wet spot and there is no water in the crawl space. Anyone have any ideas what it could be??

it could be any number of things.  odor happens whenever carpeting or wood etc get wet and it's warm.   you need to see if there's a leak in the roof or 2nd story that could be the source of the water, or a broken water pipe.  good luck.

i bet there is a interior wall very colse to the spot.....sounds like ur water leak is in the wall.....

They should get the builder back, ASAP.  My brother-in-law had a new home built and had a leak in the ceiling, where a pipe wasn't sealed correctly. Most builders are responsible for such things, so they need to get the contractor back to have a look.

first I would clean up the water and then place a single layer of newspaper all over the floor. Keep it to one layer. Where ever the water is coming from there will be a track in the paper. If no track is there then and the water mark is only in the same spot then it is either above or below.

My guess is the washing machine but that would be my first thought ... might have a loose fitting at the valve or on the back of the washer.
