New Indian hockey coach speaks out his intentions crystal clear
Michael Jack Nobbs, the new foreign coach of India’s men national hockey team, laid his first impression over the team at the national camp, instigated in Bangalore, India, on July 4.
The Australian coach was crystal clear with his plans for the team’s betterment and communicated the team about his intentions with the statement, “If you can hear them crying then that’s me torturing them right now.”
According to Nobbs, it was his destiny to get this job and shared the fact that Indian hockey contributed to his hockey career in a great deal because he came across many Indian coaches in his playing days and that he greatly admired and followed the Indian
style of hockey. He believes that this job has given him an opportunity to share it with India.
Nobbs sounded very determined in gaining back the lost glory of the team and stated in a promising way, “Everyone has to work for the betterment of Indian hockey and I see that happening now. The government has given me a five-year contract and that show
trust in me. There are always going to be ups and downs but by the end of my tenure I guarantee a medal for India.”
Keeping in view the failure of the last to foreign coaches, namely Ric Charlesworth and Jose Brasa, he shared the fact that in order to be successful as a coach in India, it will be appropriate to work with the prevailing system.
According to his plans, he will be launching a newsletter or website concerning with the team’s updates, whether if it is an injury or fixtures for a scheduled tour in the next five to six weeks time.
With the original goal of making the team qualify into the 2012 London Olympics, the chief coach’s first step is to work upon the team’s fitness. He is running some bio-metric test over the players so as to figure out their actual physical standing and the
amount of effort required over each of them.
