New Jersey Devils, Martin Brodeur down Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 for 120th Shutout -NHL Update
The New Jersey Devils were looking to stay sharp and get their second straight victory of the newly kicked off 2012-2013 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season against Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
It was a full house with 17,625 showing up at the Prudential Center in New Jersey and it certainly was a historic night as veteran Devils’ goalie, Martin Brodeur recorded his 120th shutout of his career to down Philadelphia Flyers in a clean 3-0
matchup.
"I've worked really hard to get to where I am, but the team is playing well and I'm just trying to play good hockey," Brodeur said, according to NHL.com.
The 40-year-old maintains .977 save percentage and 0.50 goals-against average in the two games played thus far and is definitely looking to keep it that way as teams fight for survival in a shortened season that will have just 48 games to play.
New Jersey entered the matchup strong as they scored two straight in the opening period alone with Travis Zajac making the opening shot of the night and veteran forward Ilya Kovalchuk following in his lead with less than a minute to go.
Kovalchuk got his second of the night, securing any doubt that Philadelphia may have had of New Jersey coughing up 2:44 into the second period as the final 20 minutes of the Eastern Conference showdown was marked by both goalies going into shutdown mode.
The Philadelphia Flyers are terming it to be just the start of the season and nothing to worry about, but they do realize that not many games are there to lose.
"It's no time for panic, but you have to tie the screws," goalie Ilya Bryzgalov said. "For us, after a bad start, we can't lose games anymore because you might never get out from the bottom of the standings … you don't have enough games. We must treat games
like the playoffs."
It will be interesting to see how these teams continue to perform as the shortened season progresses as New Jersey has the next at home against the Washington Capitals on Friday and Philadelphia will be looking for that first win against New Jersey Devils
on Thursday.
