New Jersey Devils' defenseman Mark Fayne out for 3-4 months with wrist surgery -NHL offseason Update
New Jersey Devils’ defenseman, Mark Fayne, is reported to be out of the scene for at least the next three to four months due to a nagging wrist injury which required surgery on Monday, June 25, 2012.
Fayne, who is set to become a restricted free agent after the expiry of his two-year, $1.085 million, entry-level deal, was playing through the injury during the Devils 2012 race to the Stanley Cup Finals, in which they lost in six-games to Los Angeles Kings.
In order to ensure the injury does not worsen for the upcoming season, New Jersey Devils management thought it would be best to have it repaired as they also hinted as going into negotiation talks with Fayne over a new contract.
"It's something that has been nagging him for quite a while. He could play with it, but we felt it was best to get it repaired 100 percent so it won't bother him again, which meant surgery," New Jersey Devils’ general manager, Lou Lamoriello, said. "We say
3-4 months. Who knows?
The Devils training camp is set to begin on September 21st later on this year, which Fayne will definitely miss, but could be back on the squad at 100 percent for the upcoming season, which is also not guaranteed.
A worst case scenario for New Jersey in regards to the defender’s health would be not having him back until November of 2012.
Fayne did not miss a single playoffs game with Devils but according to Lamoriello, it was not hard to see something was nagging the 25-year-old.
"You couldn't tell by the way he played," Lamoriello said.
Picked up as the 155th overall player back in round-five of the 2005 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, the Nashua, New Hampshire, United States native, completed his second straight season with New Jersey.
He had played a perfect, 82-game regular season, putting up 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists) with 26 minutes in the penalty box. Fayne also had three assist in the 24-game postseason for a plus rating of five.
New Jersey Devils have tendered a qualifying offer to Mark Fayne, which could be accepted anytime in the upcoming days.
