New Jersey Devils' veteran goalie Martin Brodeur could be testing free agency -NHL offseason Update
One player that could really be taking away the spotlight from all others during this year’s free agency is New Jersey Devils’ veteran goalie, Martin Brodeur.
The 40-year-old, 2012 Stanley Cup Finalist goalie is reportedly going in to test the free agency market if a deal with the New Jersey Devils is not reached by this Sunday, July 1, 2012.
Brodeur’s six-year, $31.2 million contract will be coming to an end on that date, which was signed on prior to the 2006-2007 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and New Jersey Devils have failed on announcing a new deal for the player as of yet.
Pat Brisson, a star agent that has represented a number of players over the years, was contacted by Martin Brodeur over the week and is also reported to have been hired by the veteran goalie.
"He will be testing free agency if a deal is not in place by Sunday," Brisson told ESPN.com via email Friday.
Without a doubt, New Jersey Devils in any way would not want to lose their All-Star goalie along with captain, Zach Parise, who is also set to test the free agency after no contract signing up until now. Due to various financial issues related with the team,
Devils management is finding it hard to offer big deals to their championship level players.
Obviously Martin Brodeur does not want to leave the team he has spent his entire career with, but he just might have to this coming Sunday.
"I don't see myself at all doing that," Brodeur said. "But again, I think circumstances is out of my hands. You never know, I guess. I don't want to. It definitely would have to be something really weird that I'm going to do that. "The Devils is what I am,
what I believe in, and this is where I want to be."
Brodeur has 19 seasons with New Jersey Devils under his belt along with 1,191 games played, an accumulated .913 save percentage along with a 2.23 goals-against average.
The Montreal, Quebec, Canada native, was drafted 20th overall by Devils back in round-one of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft.
