New Jersey Devils Anton Volchenkov out for Six Weeks with Broken Ankle -NHL Update
New Jersey Devils veteran defenseman, Anton Volchenkov, will be out for at least six weeks due to a broken ankle, reported the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise on Monday, October 22, 2012.
While talking to Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record, New Jersey Devils general manager, Lou Lamoriello, confirmed the news and stated that the club would keep monitoring the player and update the media on his status to keep them posted in.
According to USAToday.com, his agent, Jay Grossman, also made the news official that the veteran defender broke his foot while playing for Torpedo Nizhny Novrogod in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), of Russia during the Lockout.
"He is optimistic he won't miss much time," Grossman said.
“Their doctors have told him that it’s not expected he would miss that much time,” Grossman added. “It just depends on how he responds. But, going from the way it’s been explained to me by Anton, it’s an unfortunate situation, but it doesn’t sound like it’s
going to be any kind of major, long-term issue.”
The 30-year-old is currently under a six-year, $25.5 million contract with the New Jersey Devils, which will make him an unrestricted free agent by the time the 2015-2016 NHL regular season comes to an end. There is still no official confirmation whether
he will continue getting a salary, now that he is injured, but should be to cover the costs incurred for treatments.
Volchenkov is a former 21st overall draft pick of the first round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. He ended off his second straight season with the New Jersey Devils last season and has a total of 557 games under his belt with
113 points (18 goals, 95 assists) and 367 minutes in penalty time.
The native of Moscow, Russia, is termed to be one of best shot blockers in the league and is termed to be an integral part of the Devils club after playing a major role, not only during the regular season but also in New Jersey’s run to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Updates should be expected on the players status in the upcoming weeks.
