New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello “Embarrassed for the Game” -NHL Lockout Update
The National Hockey League (NHL) has now been locked out for over three months now and is closing in on being its fourth, which has certainly depressed many who associate themselves with one of the leading sports leagues in North America.
Lou Lamoriello, General Manager of the New Jersey Devils, is one of those seasoned managers who has seen more than his fair share of lockouts and work stoppages as currently is the longest serving GM in history of an NHL franchise. In a recent interview with the Newark Star-Ledger on Wednesday, Lamoriello spoke his mind and stated that he is “embarrassed for the game”.
“Embarrassed for the game... It’s coming down to the wire right now. We’ve just got to trust the people that are involved. I’m embarrassed we are where we’re at. That’s the best expression I can use,” Lamoriello said.
Being the GM of a team that ended the 2012 NHL regular season as sixth in the Eastern Conference and managed to work their way through to the Stanley Cup Finals, Lamoriello has certainly asserted himself as one of the best in the business. They may have ultimately lost to a supercharged Los Angeles Kings club, but it did not come about without a fight.
At the moment, there is no really any middle path between the league and Players’ Association as to how they may go about in the next couple of days as the lockout continues. All 600-plus regular season games have been cancelled through January 14th, and there is no surety that a season will get off to a start after that.
Lamoriello is also confused at the moment as to what is going on and what should their next move be, but now, hockey analysts like Don Cherry are reiterating that only compromising will allow both sides to get something done in that regard.
It will definitely be interesting to see whether Lamoriello being vocal affects the situation in anyway, but for now, there is nothing that can be said about that as Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director, Donald Fehr, continue to stay quiet.
