New Jersey Devils dominate Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 -NHL Update
New Jersey continued to roll as they not only grabbed their 40th victory of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season but also a fourth straight to continue working up the Eastern Conference.
Devils dominated the superstar Philadelphia Flyers team, 4-1, Sunday night, March 11, 2012, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, which basically just stunned the team focused on winning a Stanley Cup.
Having a number of veteran All-Stars, Flyers were determined to down an inexperienced New Jersey team but were instead shocked with the young players rallying for goal after goal.
The home team’s defenseman were working Philadelphia to the max as they kept Flyers at bay with only 19 attempts on goalie, Martin Brodeur, throughout the contest for his 650th career win.
"It's unreal," said New Jersey captain, Zach Parise. "Our goaltending has been great and Marty has been playing really well. It does seem like just yesterday he got 551. It's gone by fast."
Coming in with a five-game winning streak, Philadelphia decided to rest superstar goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov, who has recently risen to fame with the Flyers’ fans due to his unprecedented playing in the past few games.
Sergei Bobrovsky was in the net and failed to block four of 31 shots in total.
"We've really tightened up defensively," Brodeur said. "It's a great sign. Our penalty kill has been tremendous. Our power play has been helping us out. We've been winning in similar ways every night."
Patrik Elias gave New Jersey the lead on a power play with less than a minute to go in round-one of the contest.
Claude Giroux tied the match 16 seconds into the final period, giving off the impression that Philadelphia would bounce back at any moment but it was the exact opposite as Anton Volchenkov, Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise fired three straight to secure the
match.
"Maybe we should have been a little more patient when we tied it," Philadelphia’s Jaromir Jagr said. "We felt we had the momentum on our side."
Philadelphia Flyers have a chance to rebound as they will be hosting New Jersey Devils this time on Tuesday for their second straight matchup.
