New Jersey Devils fall to Ottawa Senators in overtime as Daniel Alfredsson pots game-winner 3-2
New Jersey thought that they had the match entering the final 20 minutes of regulation with a 2-0 lead, but Ottawa bounced back equally as well to take the contest into overtime as Daniel Alfredsson potted the game-winner in the final minute on a power play
as the Senators edged the Devils, 3-2, on Monday night, January 2, 2011, at the sold-out Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Ottawa captain, Daniel Alfredsson, is always known to have that extra edge when facing the New Jersey Devils, which played out well for him during their match after the visiting team scored two straight after a scoreless first period.
Dainius Zubrus potted his 11th goal of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season nearly midway through the second while David Clarkson added another in the final moments to extend the lead to, 2-0, entering the final period of
regulation.
New Jersey gave three straight penalties during the second period as Ilya Kovalchuk, Travis Zajac and Bryce Salvador, were booked with various minor offences but Ottawa failed to capitalise on any single one.
"I think for us, we stick with the program; we stick with the game", Anderson said. "And we don't venture too far off of it. Eventually we wear the other team down and we make the best of our chances. They have a breakdown, (Jason) Spezza gets in on a breakaway
and he you can't let that happen – he's going to score almost every time. We've got some good players and they make (other teams) pay".
Jason Spezza triggered a comeback for the Senators in the opening two minutes of the third while Erik Condra managed to push off the shorthanded fear by adding his seventh of the season while Spezza was on the benches for tripping at the midway mark.
David Clarkson unfortunately went out at the 2:58 mark of the overtime extension, which gave Ottawa a great opportunity to take the match with Daniel Alfredsson capitalising the on the chance with his 12th goal and game-winner.
The Senators have one more at home against Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday before heading out while New Jersey Devils will be hosting Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
