New Jersey Devils knock out New York Rangers overtime in Game 6 -NHL Playoffs Update
New Jersey Devils are on route to winning their fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history after Martin Brodeur and the squad eliminated New York Rangers after an intense overtime decider, 3-2, in Game 6 of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup
Eastern Conference Playoff Finals.
A strong first period gave New Jersey a lead to work on with New York bouncing back amazingly in the second period. Martin Brodeur stayed strong throughout the contest as he kept Rangers out on 33 of 35 attempts while his rival in the New York net faced
29 and fell short on three.
As the series headed back to the Prudential Center on Friday, May 25, 2012, New Jersey was already on a two-game winning streak after a huge comeback against New York. It just seemed like Rangers failed to hold the Devils down and could not compete with
them at any level.
"We caught them on a line change and their defensemen were tired," said Devils coach, Peter DeBoer. "We found a way to jam one in. That's the only way you're going to score on Lundqvist. You're not going to get a clean one. You're going to have to work for
it around the net. And that's what we did."
Ryan Carter got the first goal of the night on a tip in from a missed shot by Stephen Gionta. Ilya Kovalchuk added the second straight on a power play with Ruslan Fedotenko on the bench for tripping.
Fedotenko got New York their first of the night midway through the second and Ryan Callahan got the luck edge on the puck to level the match at 13:41 to force the overtime extension after a scoreless third period competition.
Only one minutes into overtime, there was a scramble in front and behind Henrik Lundqvist which rookie Devils’ player, Adam Henrique, took advantage of by edging in the loose puck to take the match and the series.
"That one was like Christmas," said Henrique, who got his second series game-winning goal, the first being against Florida.
Martin Brodeur had always termed Henrik Lundqvist to be not only better than him, but the best in the league, but it was him who prevailed this time.
"When they scored, it was such an empty feeling," said Lundqvist."It is shocking."
