New Jersey Devils place Colin White, Trent Hunter on waivers –NHL offseason Update
New Jersey Devils placed a pair of veteran players, Colin White and Trent Hunter, on waivers in an attempt to free up their roster space before the new season begins in October, announced the team management on Monday, August 1, 2011.
New Jersey's general manager, Lou Lamoriello, made the announcement and also added that the team will buy out their contracts if both White and Hunter are not picked up by other teams before a reasonable timeframe, making them unrestricted free agents.
Colin White, a 33-year-old veteran defenseman from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada, was drafted by Devils with their 49th overall pick during the 1996 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft.
White played his 11th year with the team last season, which totals up his statistics to 743 major league games and 125 points (20 goals, 105 assists). Although not confirmed, it is speculated that White will eventually retire once his is bought
out and not signed anywhere else.
Buying out Colin White will cost New Jersey Devils $1 million per year, for the next two-years as part of his contract.
Newly acquired right winger, Trent Hunter, is also on the list to be put on waivers by New Jersey. Brought in from New York Islanders, Hunter has played all of his seven seasons with his original draft team.
Hunter was acquired by Devils last week in a trade with New York for Brian Rolston, in order to add depth to their forward. Last season, he was only limited to 17 games and four points (1 goal, 3 assists).
In total, the 31-year-old forward, who was selected as the 150th overall pick during round-six of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by New Jersey, has played 459 games and registered 229 points (99 goals, 130 assists).
In order to buy out Hunter, the price would be over $2.6 million, they will have to continue on paying him over a span of four years, which would $666,667 per season.
Both Colin White and Trent Hunter might not be the top contributing players on a team, but they certainly provide that extra depth which every franchise in the league can benefit from.
