New Jersey Devils sign Reece Scarlett and Damon Severson to entry-level deals -NHL Update
The 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finalists, New Jersey Devils, continued to work the offseason as the club signed a pair of recent draft picks to three-year, entry-level deals on Thursday, September 6, 2012.
It is reported by the team that Reece Scarlett and Damon Severson were two stand out players during the New Jersey Devils development training camp and excelled while playing in the defenseman category.
The biggest problem that Scarlett had was gaining weight and increases his size for the upcoming season and eating six or seven times a day took its toll on the player emotionally for sure.
"Personally, I felt I really developed as an offensive defenseman," Scarlett said. "After the draft I really wanted to prove to everyone that I should have gotten a lot higher than I did, so I really took that to heart and went out there and felt more comfortable
with myself and my ability. I knew that if I step up in the play that I have the skating skill to get back, so I jumped into play a lot more often."
"I gained 10 pounds since last training camp and am hoping to put on 10 more pounds," Scarlett added. "It's tough. I eat six or seven meals a day and it just doesn't happen for me.”
Scarlett was picked up as the 159th overall pick back in round-six of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and played with the Swift Current Broncos in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He had 49 points (9 goals, 40 assists) in 71 games with the minor league
club last season.
Damson Severson is an 18-year-old defenseman that was drafted 60th overall in the second round of this year’ NHL Entry Draft. He has been playing with the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL also and is seen to be a player with a lot of potential for the
New Jersey Devils and could quite possibly be the next leading defender for them in all cases.
It will be interesting to see how these players fair up in the upcoming days and weeks as they continue to improve themselves for primetime hockey.
