New Jersey Devils sign netminder Scott Wedgewood on entry level deal-NHL News
The New Jersey Devils confirmed on Monday, March 19, 2012, to have signed goaltender, Scott Wedgewood, from the junior hockey league on an entry level deal and the new signee is expected to join the team at its training camp later this year.
Wedgewood, the 19-year-old netminder from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), was confirmed to have reached the deal after some reports earlier linked him to the move.
All earlier reports had been discarded by both sides as to be mere an idea that was in the premature phase of discussions. Now it is officially confirmed that Wedgewood is coming New Jersey.
Lou Lamoriello, the Devils’ chief executive, first broke the news of signing the youngster. He, however, did not disclose the terms of the deal, including its tenure and value.
Wedgewood has played for four successive years for Plymouth in the OHL. He joined Plymouth after being picked up as the 84th overall draft pick in the 2010 season. It is for the first time that the player is going to keep the net for a professional
league team.
The player is coming out of the junior league with the record of 28-10-3. His performance included three shutouts, .911 goal saving percentage and the 3.02 goals-against average in total 43 games he played during this season.
In total, he has played 122 games in the regular season of OHL and has maintained a record of 61-39-5.
The player has also represented the Team Canada in 2012 World Junior Championships game and maintained the record of 2-0-0. He helped the team to earn bronze medal in the championship.
So altogether he has a plenty of experience on hand before making it to the professional league and his performance will determine how well he has capitalised on that experience.
The netminder will join Devils in their training camp in September this year (2012), which is going to be the third training camp for him.
Apparently, both the stakeholders are happy over the arrangement and said to be looking forward to the player’s contribution to the team’s form.
With 87 points, Devils are five points behind the Philadelphia Flyers who, with 92 points, are ranked at 5th position in the Eastern Conference.
If Devils manage to end the regular season by being among the top four teams of the conference, they will earn the home-ice advantage in the playoffs.
