New Jersey Devils slow down Colorado Avalanche with a 1-0 shutdown -NHL Update
Colorado was on route to toppling their fourth straight matchup but the Avalanche was met with an even stronger goalie, Martin Brodeur, who blocked all shots on him during regulation and the shootout as New Jersey Devils won 1-0 on Thursday night, March
15, 2012, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
It was Brodeur’s 118th career shutout and despite even the best of attempts by the hot headed Colorado team, he did not seem to even flinch during the match.
"We found a way to get a win," said Devils coach, Peter DeBoer. "I don't compare this to the Philly game. We created opportunities to score tonight. They just didn't go in."
New Jersey is feeling more confident than ever as they sit well above Ottawa Senators in the sixth number spot with 87 points and could be moving up in the ranks with the newly acquired potential.
Devils and Avalanche were only to go head-to-head twice this 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) and in the first, it was all Colorado with a 6-1 dominating victory back in November, but now New Jersey has shown them it has changed a lot since then.
"We're a different team now than when we played them the first time," Brodeur added. "It's always in the back of your mind when you killed in a game like that. It was nice to come back and win against a good team. We had to play pretty good and Giguere had
to make a lot of good saves, especially in the third."
Scoreless throughout regulation and the overtime extension as both goalies were just too hard to beat, New Jersey and Brodeur came out with a game plan in the shootout decider.
Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise scored on both of their opening attempts on Colorado goalie, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, while Brodeur blocked the Avalanche’s first two to take the match.
New Jersey will be going on to host one of the top teams at the moment, the Pittsburgh Penguins, on Saturday.
Colorado could possibly going under for a slump as they have to face the top Eastern Conference team, New York Rangers, on Saturday.
