New Jersey Devils snap losing streak in shootout win against Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 -NHL Update
Patrik Elias scored on New Jersey’s last attempt in the shootout to lift the Devils to their first win in the past four matchups, snapping a three-game losing streak over the Philadelphia Flyers team, 4-3, Thursday night, November 3, 2011, at the sold-out
Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
Philadelphia when entering the contest, was eyeing a third straight win after capitalising on their last two opportunities against the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres, but New Jersey was determined to win, a result which showed in the end.
"That's the type of game we need to play", Devils coach, Peter DeBoer, said. "A lot of times in this league you get what you deserve and we deserved two points tonight".
Failing to capitalise on three straight power play opportunities during the opening period, Philadelphia kicked off the scoring during the second as Zac Rinaldo scored his inaugural goal of the season 2:28 in, followed by Claude Giroux with his eighth at
the 8:08 mark.
The Devils countered back 51 seconds later as Zach Parise potted his fifth and Adam Henrique levelled the match in the following three minutes.
"The second period, I'm not real happy with”, Flyers coach, Peter Laviolette, said. "We were slow to the puck, slow to support the puck, and I think turnovers played into it. The third period I thought was much more competitive from our guys. We went back
and forth more and traded. New Jersey played a strong game. And I think I'll look back and it will probably be the second period that stands out to me".
Maxime Talbot took control of the puck early in the third and final period of regulation and scored his fourth on a breakaway unassisted through Sergei Bobrovsky, who was making a start for Philadelphia instead of rusty, Ilya Bryzgalov.
David Clarkson tied it up again a little over 10 minutes later which forced both teams to battle it out in overtime.
Failing to score in overtime, Zach Parise potted on New Jersey’s first attempt after Wayne Simmonds’ unsuccessful shot prior to him.
Daniel Briere made the following shot to Parise, but after Claude Giroux missed on the Flyers last, Patrik Elias gave New Jersey the lift they needed on their last to win the match.
