New Jersey Devils top rookie Adam Henrique out for 4-6 weeks following Thumb Surgery -NHL Update
Calder Trophy finalist and top rookie of the New Jersey Devils, Adam Henrique, has reportedly injured his left thumb and will be out for at least four to six weeks due to the procedure needed to correct the suffering.
Henrique suffered the injury during a matchup with New Jersey affiliates in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Albany Devils. The news was also confirmed by general manager of the minor league club, Chris Lamoriello.
NJ.com reports that Henrique underwent an MRI procedure to show the damage, which was diagnosed as a ulnar collateral ligament damage. It was during the first period of the matchup between the Devils and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton that the player faced the injury,
and has fortunately been termed not be serious in nature.
"It's unfortunate," Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said. "I was at the game. He thought it was a sprain. We waited until Monday and had an MRI (in Albany) and felt it was better to have it repaired than to wait.” "He'll be in a cast for four weeks and then rehab
for two weeks."
Henrique is a native of Brantford, Ontario, Canada, and was picked up by the New Jersey Devils as the 82nd overall back in round-three of the 2008 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. He has two major league seasons
under his belt for a total of 75 games played at that level with 51 points (16 goals, 35 assists).
Last hockey season was a breakthrough for the youngster as the 22-year-old potted all 51 that year along with reaching the Stanley Cup Finals with New Jersey after a 13 point (5 goals, 8 assists) performance in 24 postseason games, a plus-12 rating and 11
minutes in the penalty box.
Henrique was confident after his breakthrough season in the major league and will hopefully rise to the occasion once again after making a full recovery.
“I think so,” Henrique said. “I’m still a young guy, but I think having a year in the NHL learning from guys like Zach (Parise), Marty (Brodeur), Patty (Elias) and Kovy (Ilya Kovalchuk) is something I can share with the guys here. I want to be a leader here
for guys who want to ask questions if they feel they need to.”
