New Jersey Devils trade veteran Brian Rolston for Trent Hunter with New York Islanders –NHL Update
New Jersey Devils traded their veteran player, Brian Rolston, to New York Islanders in exchange for forward, Trent Hunter, on Thursday, July 28. The move comes in order to free up some salary cap space, which is an estimated $3 million.
Trent Hunter on the other hand, brings along with him two seasons left in his contract, with each worth a cool $2 million, which is now in the hands of New Jersey.
At the age of 38, Brian Rolston is a fair contributor. Drafted as the 11th overall pick, during round-one of the 1991 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by New Jersey Devils, Rolston has played nearly 16 seasons in the major league.
Last season, the Flint, Missouri, United States native, put up 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) in 65 games played, along with recording a plus-minus rating of -6. Up until now, Rolston has played 1,186 games and boasts a record of 737 points (335 goals,
402 assists) and an accumulated plus-minus rating of 70.
The left winger bring along with him plenty of experience, which is what New York Islanders general manager, Garth Snow, hopes to give to his roster full of young and aspiring players.
"Every deal is different", Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. "This took a lot of conversations and we're extremely happy to finalize the transaction to bring Brian Rolston to the New York Islanders”.
New Jersey Devils general manager, Lou Lamoriello, regarded the sudden deal as purely a business transaction.
"It was as much a business trade as anything", Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said.
Veteran right winger, Trent Hunter, a 150th overall pick in round-six of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by Anaheim Ducks, never played with his original draft team but was initially traded to New York Islanders, and has spent his eight season career
over there, ever since.
The Red Deer, Alberta, Canada native, was once a top scorer for Islanders, but has faced a downfall during the past two seasons, especially the last season, in which he managed to only pot four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in 17 games only.
Hunter’s best season was his second with New York in which he played 77 games and scored 51 points (25 goals, 26 assists).
Both Brian Rolston and Trent Hunter hope to make a fresh start with new teams, which they are both excited about.
