New Jersey Devils wins 2-1 against the Pittsburgh Penguins
The first game of Friday was played at the Prudential Centre as the home team New Jersey Devils was up against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The game was important for both teams with Penguins looking a win for closing on the league leaders while the Devils looked to win to continue the impressive form which has seen come close to the play-off cut.
The game was pretty much equal during the opening 20 minutes of play. However, both teams managed to score a goal apiece in the second.
There were no goals in regulation time which resulted in the game ending with the scores level on 1-1.
The game went into overtime where the Devils scored to win the game 2-1 in the end.
Ilya Kovalchuk of the Devils was named the star of the game for scoring the winning goal.
The game started off with the Devils high on confidence as they came up with some strong attacks early on. Keeping in mind the necessity of the winning points, the Devils didn’t overdo it and maintained a decent defence as well.
With the passage of time, the Penguins also started to come up with some brilliant pieces of play that saw them in scoring positions. Both teams came up with good passing that enabled them to get past the opposing defence regularly.
The period ended with the scores level on 0-0 with the Devils making 8 goal attempts during the period while the Penguins made 9 shots on goal.
The second period started off with the Devils on top right from the start with the Penguins matching their pace. There were several chances for both teams to go ahead but unfortunately this didn’t happen.
Devils managed to go ahead as they scored through Travis Zajac from a brilliant backhand shot in the fourth minute.
The Penguins were able to respond to this with attacks and came across some decent scoring chances. The Penguins successfully scored in the sixth minute through Tyler Kennedy from a well placed flick shot.
Both the teams continually piled pressure on the opposing defence but a goal wasn’t scored in the minutes afterwards.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1. During the course of the period, the Devils made 13 goal attempts while the Penguins made 7 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of play saw the Penguins dominate the game when it came to the production of shots on goal but with the passage of time the Devils were able to come up with some decent plays as well.
The period ended with the scores level 1-1. During the course of the period, the Penguins made 10 goal attempts while the Devils made 6 shots on goal.
As a result, the game went into overtime where it was the Devils who scored in the fifth minute through Ilya Kovalchuk during power play to win the game by 2-1 in the end.
